The Steely Pan
Steel Band ®

consists of 20 performers and 40 steel drums, including drumset  and percussion. SPSB has gained quite a reputation performing at universities, art festivals and and all types of schools throughout the American South for over the past 16 years; They perform a variety of music, from traditional soca / calypsos, to classical, to rock and roll, and even traditional Appalachian Mountain music, demonstrating to audiences the variety of music that can be performed on the pans. Not just "Yellow Bird", and other Caribbean tunes. During their concerts they like to break away from the steel drums and perform at least one selection with African or Middle Eastern hand instruments. Dr. Meister talks about the instruments and their origins, and members of the ensemble demonstrate the individual sounds of the instruments. During each concert the band demonstrates an oral history of the steel band by performing on tamboo bamboos and early steel instruments.

The Lettermen are pleased to announce the return of the tremendously talented Mark Preston as an official member of The Lettermen. Mark will take the stage again with The Lettermen beginning in January 2006.

Mark originally joined The Lettermen twenty-one years ago, on September 4, 1984 - the very same day that Donovan Tea became a Letterman. This spectacular configuration enjoyed performing together across the United States for four years until Mark's departure in September 1988.

Prior to his original stint with The Lettermen, Mark was a featured performer at such hotels as The Silverbird, The Dunes, The Marina, and The Sahara in Las Vegas, as well as Harrah's in Reno and Lake Tahoe. Mark also appeared in such hit television series as "Vega$".

In 1986, Tony Butala, Donovan Tea and Mark Preston recorded what was to be the last vinyl album that The Lettermen ever released, entitled "Why I Love Her". Mark also appeared on "The Lettermen - It Feels Like Christmas", "The Lettermen Best Hits" (a Japanese release), and the singles, "It Feels Like Christmas/I Believe" and "Proud Lady Of America/Star Spangled Banner".

Since his departure from The Lettermen in 1988, Mark went on to establish himself as one of the top entertainers in the cruise ship industry, allowing him to travel the world-over, filling showrooms, delighting audiences of all ages and performing on such distinguished cruise lines as Celebrity/Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Princess, Holland America, Royal Viking, Cunard, Crystal, Sitmar and Admiral.

Listening to that tall, dark, handsome vocalist again performing harmoniously with The Lettermen, and soloing on such songs as "Lady", "This Is The Moment", "Copa Cabana", "My Way" and "Unanswered Prayers", will be an exquisite pleasure for Lettermen audiences.

Darren Dowler has been a member of The Lettermen since October 1995. His contract with The Lettermen will expire on December 31, 2005, at which time he will begin pursuing other interests away from The Lettermen. We have enjoyed the time he has devoted to the group, appreciate his personality and talent, and wish him well in all of his endeavors. We will be following and supporting his career and look forward to seeing him during Lettermen travels worldwide.
